BABY MONITOR UX CASE STUDY

Taking a product experience from infuriating to extraordinary.

This project was created for the UX Capstone course at Western Washington University, in collaboration with project mentors from Artefact. I worked closely with teammates Ashley Ziencina and Hao Trieu.

Project Brief

Our team was provided a video baby monitor, with the task of transforming its terrible product experience into something exceptional.

WHAT DO CURRENT CUSTOMERS THINK?

This product is a best-seller in its category, but feedback from customers is extremely negative.

Users repeatedly complain about the device being frustrating, hard-to-use, and too expensive.

“Why does this cost $175?

I did not get what I paid for.”

When we looked at the product itself, it became clear why users were frustrated.

The UI was relatively simple, but offered no little to the user about the buttons, icons, and options, and the product documentation was not helpful either.

WHAT DO PARENTS WANT TO KNOW?

We talked to parents to find out how they actually use baby monitors, and what information is most important to them.

Users want to know two things:

1. Is my child OK?

2. If there is a problem, why?

To address the findings of our research, we came up with two main goals to focus our efforts.

GOAL #1

Don’t just deliver information, deliver understanding.

Being able to see and hear your child during a meltdown is one thing, but understanding why it happened is another.

We should give parents tools to further understand their child’s state, and to learn how to prevent future crises.

GOAL #2

The experience should meet the expectations of modern parents.

The average new parent in America is 26 years old. They are more tech-savvy than ever and expect high-quality experiences from their products.

The experience of this device should meet those expectations and justify its cost.

MAKING IT HAPPEN
